Grace Ann Whalen, age 85, of Clinton, died Sunday, November 19, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, November 22nd at Price of Peace Parish, St. Mary‚s Church. The Rev. Thomas Hennen will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Tuesday at the Pape Funeral Home, with a vigil service at 4:15 PM. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Grace Kramer, Luke Thomsen, Andy Whalen, Kate Determann, Seth Knickrehm, Jordan Whalen, Emily Knickrehm, and Breanna Whalen.
Grace was born in Maquoketa, IA on October 4, 1921, the daughter of Byron Lee and Hilda Rose (Ray) Matthews. Grace graduated from Clinton High School in 1939. She married Robert Francis Whalen on August 24, 1941 in Clinton; Robert died in 1997. Grace was a secretary at Climax Engines in Clinton for many years. She also worked at the Maquoketa School District and Medical Clinic. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, where she volunteered at the gift shop. She enjoyed playing bridge, crossword puzzles, crocheting, reading, and spending time with her family.
Grace is survived by two daughters, Susan Thomsen of Clinton and Laurie (Doug) Knickrehm of Maquoketa; two sons, Joseph Whalen of San Francisco, CA and Allen (Darcy) Whalen of Clinton; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and three sisters, Virginia Roessler and Mary (Don) Davis both of Clinton, and Carol (Gary) Zaiser of Newark, DE. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Robert in 1996 and a grandson, Anthony in 1996, and two brothers.
