SAVANNA, Ill. — Edward L. Johnson, 78, of Savanna, died Saturday at his home.

Inurnment will be in Mouth of Stillman Cemetery, Stillman Valley, Ill.

He was born May 23, 1928, in Elmhurst, Ill., to Louis and Ann Lindroth Johnson. He married Phyllis Kinnan on Aug. 27, 1949, in Mason City.

He attended Bensenville (Ill.) High School in 1946.

He served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer from 1947 to 1948 in Tokyo, Japan.

He worked with the Milwaukee Railroad as a locomotive engineer from 1942 until his retirement in 1988. He also worked as a DuPage County sheriff deputy in the 1950s. In 1974, he and his wife moved from Bensenville to Savanna where he operated Sandy Lane Resort.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and Moose Lodge, Savanna. He also was a charter member of the Mississippi Flyway Sportsman Club and supported the Savanna Wrestling Boosters.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kathleen (Bruce) Wilson of Barrington Hills, Ill., Tina (Ruben) Garza of Bensenville and Connie (Pete) McCormick of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; three sons, Michael Johnson of Willowbrook, Ill., Patrick (Cheri) Johnson of Clinton and Timothy (Darcy) Johnson of Reedsburg, Wis.; one stepmother, Mae Johnson of Byron, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Freeport (Ill.) Health Network Hospice in his name.
