Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at the church with Pastor Linda Stransky officiating. Carson and Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa is handling the arrangements.

MECHANICSVILLE — Alan Dale Weets, 74, of Mechanicsville, died Thursday at home.

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.

He was born Sept. 17, 1932, near Buckhorn in rural Jackson County to William and Alvina Luett Weets. He married Mary Herkelmann on Sept. 21, 1952, at Elwood United Methodist Church.

He graduated from Lost Nation High School as salutatorian of his class.

He and his wife lived in Lost Nation and Springdale until moving to the Lester Nicoll farm south of Mechanicsville in March 1956.

A farmer his entire life, he participated in the local and Iowa Masters corn yield contests sponsored by the Jaycees and was selected as Outstanding Young Farmer by the Jaycees in 1959. He sold Garst Seed Corn for 20 years.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau and Soybean Association. He also was a member of the United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees and co-chaired the building committee for the educational wing.

Survivors include his wife; seven children, Mary Beth (Rob) Bixler of Mount Pleasant, Barbara (Michael) Caudill of Solon, Carl (Cathy) Weets of Cooper, Texas, Alan Steven (Teresa) Weets of Mechanicsville, Ben Weets of Tipton, Janine (Kevin) Sulzner of Anamosa and Susan (Adam) Robinson of Mechanicsville; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, William (Janette) Weets, Harold (Dolores) Weets and Darrell Weets; and two sisters-in-law, Helen Kinrade and Zelda (Burt) Dostal.

An memorial fund has been established.
