MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. — Helen Dale Dixon, 89, of Mount Carroll, died Oct. 12 at the Carroll County Good Samaritan Center, Mount Carroll.

Her body will be donated to science.

She was born April 10, 1917, in Fort Dodge, Kan., to Fred and Mabel Long Frisch. She married William “Bill” Dixon on May 8, 1942, in Chicago. He died in 1964.

She grew up in Hutchinson, Kan., and was a 1934 graduate of Hutchinson High School. She studied at Chicago Musical College. She later received a bachelor’s of music degree from Chicago Musical College and a master of arts from the University of Chicago. She completed graduate studies at DePaul University, the University of Chicago where she took private piano lessons and Northwestern University where she took private piano lessons.

She taught piano in Chicago at Chicago Musical College from 1944 to 1949 and North Park College from 1952 to 1957. She also performed piano recitals on radio stations in Hutchinson and Evanston, Ill., and Chicago. She was a featured pianist for the Centennial Celebration of Steinway and Sons in Chicago in 1953.

In 1957, she moved to Mount Carroll where she taught piano, music and literature at Shimer College and gave annual solo recitals. Upon the closing of Shimer College, she became an artist-in-residence with the Highland Area Arts Council, Freeport, Ill. She also gave piano lessons to area residents in her home for 25 years.

Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Jane Howard of Burlington and Amy Alice Peak of Kansas City, Kan.; three nieces and two nephews; four great-nieces and nephews; and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
