Vinson Henry Jetter

Vinson Henry Jetter, 62, of Clinton passed away on October 16, 2006 at the University Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 1:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 621 S. 3rd St., Clinton. Visitation will be held Friday, October 20, 2006. from 4-8 PM at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 303 S. 3rd St., Clinton. Pallbearers will be Duane Peters, Kevin Hart, Craig White, Brian Ross, William Jetter, Jack Bouser, Marquis Winston, and Candel Salazar.

Vinson was born on August 3, 1944 to William C. Jetter, Sr. and Margaret A. Culberson in Davenport, IA. He attended Clinton schools and participated in Clinton High Band. His senior year he became the first African American prom king. In 1964, he was appointed Senate Page for the 6th general assembly in Des Moines, IA. He served in the United Stares Air Force. He worked for 3M in Cordova, IL for 33 years.

He volunteered thousands of hours for the community of Clinton. He founded the Youth for a Safe Non-Violent Community in 1993. He was a member of the Clinton Substance Abuse Council, Voices of Diversity, Community Response Issues Task Force, Character Counts Program, Clinton Peace Coalition, Habitat for Humanity, New Directions Board, 4-H Club, 21st Century after school program, NAACP, Health Advisory Council, Clinton County Against Child Abuse, Youth Advisory Council, Bethel A.M.E. Steward Board. He also helped make the Youth for a Safe Non-Violent Community Youth Center a year-round program. This project was nearest to Vinson’s heart. It has hosted many community programs since it’s inception.

Through out his life “Uncle Buddy”, no matter how busy he was in the community he always had time for his family. He leaves behind his mother Margaret; four sisters; Juanita (Eunice) Fayne of Fayne, TN; Charlene Cole of Fayetteville, NC; Marguerite Peters and Dorothy “Dina” White both of Clinton. Three brothers; Roland (Clara) McCorkle of Milan, IL; William C. Jetter, Jr. of Moline, IL; and John Jetter of Clinton, IA. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father William Jetter, Sr. and one brother Robert Jetter.

He was a true community spirit, contributor and leader. Loved by many, he will surely be missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vinson H. Jetter Memorial Fund for the Youth Center. Lemke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
