Vernon E. “Hap” Temple

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home.

SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Stanley Bomgarden, pastor of Fulton Presbyterian Church, officiating.

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — Vernon E. “Hap” Temple, 79, of Escondido and formerly of Fulton, Ill., died Sept. 13 at his home.

Interment will be in Rock Island (Ill.) National Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joshua and Michael Temple, Ronald and Ryan Pessman, Walter Miller, Dave Jones and Arthur Norman.

He was born Sept. 24, 1926, in Garden Plain Township, Ill., to Edward D. and Anna Ottens Temple. He was married to Viletta M. Pfundstein for 23 years.

He attended Garden Plain Grade School and attended Erie (Ill.) High School. He graduated from Fulton High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was employed as a delivery truck driver with the Peter Pan Bread Co. He was then employed as a general agent with Prudential Life Insurance Co. and served as a steward with Insurance Workers International Union Local 79.

He moved to Escondido in 1989.

He was a member and post commander of American Legion Fulton Post 402 and later was a member of American Legion Escondido Post 149. He was a member of VFW Post 8281, Morrison, Ill., and later VFW Post 3795, San Marco, Calif. He also was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Clinton, Arie 705. He was a member of Fulton Presbyterian Church and served as deacon. He also was a member of First United Methodist Church, Escondido. He served on the Fulton City Council as a two-term alderman in Ward 2.

Survivors include one daughter, Cynthia A. Temple of Fulton; one son, James E. (Lynne) Temple of Ringgold, Ga.; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Renkes of Fulton; and a special friend with whom he made his home, Ruth Athey of Escondido.
