Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Garland Gotoski officiating.

CALAMUS — August K. Vetter, 70, of Calamus, died Sunday at Trinity Medical Center, Terrace Park Campus, Bettendorf.

Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Calamus.

He was born March 17, 1936, in Davenport to Louis and Alice Vick Vetter. He married Rogene Verdell Longe on Oct. 13, 1963, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline, Ill. She died in 2003.

He served in the U.S. Army, both stateside and in Korea, during the Vietnam War. He retired as a lieutenant colonel following 20 years of active and reserve service. He taught artillery targeting and strategy while assigned with the 2053 Reserve Unit in Davenport. He also farmed in rural Calamus for many years.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound; Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt; Calamus Lions and American Legion.

Survivors include one daughter, Carmen (Mike) Wycoff of Mount Vernon; two sons, Paul (Jane) Vetter of Lakeville, Minn., and Eric Vetter of DeWitt; five grandchildren; one sister, Naomi Therres of Minnesota; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Karen Broberg of Moline, Allen (Linda) Longe of Unadilla, N.Y., and Kendall (Betty) Longe of Omaha, Neb.; several nieces and a nephew.

Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Camp or Grace Lutheran Church’s roof fund.
