Ray Nugent

Ray Nugent, 80, Grand Mound, IA, died Sunday evening, August 20, 2006 at Wheatland Manor, Wheatland, IA.

Raymond Joseph Nugent was born September 28, 1925 in Grand Mound, to Michael and Margaret (Megee) Nugent. He graduated from the Grand Mound High School in 1942 and attended the University of Iowa. Ray married Mavis Puck, June 26, 1948. She died March 15, 1959. He married Helen (Pfannenstiel) McDonnell, August 3, 1963. The couple then settled in Grand Mound.

Ray was a member of SS Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound, and was treasurer of the Holy Name Society there. He was also active in the Grand Mound Ball Club, president of the Grand Mound Community Center Board and was a “caller” for the Grand Mound Bingo Association on Thursdays. He retired in 1989 from Kartridg Pak after 26 years of service. Ray enjoyed helping farmers, his garden, and delivering flowers.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; 8 daughters and 10 sons and their spouses; daughters, Karen (Brian) Johnson, Waterloo, IA, Patricia (Gunter) Gebhardt, Berlin, Germany, Judith Rupp of Wheaton, IL, Kay (John) Grillot, Washington, IL, Ann (Jason) Witt, Cumming, GA, Jean (William) Wright, League City, TX, Margaret (Andrew) Beierwaltes, Niles, IL, and Mary Therese (John) Eldracher, Yale, MI; sons, Michael (Nancy) Nugent, Chesterfield, MO, Paul (Lana) Nugent, Morrison, IL, LeRoy (Nancy) McDonnell, Verona, WI, Dale (Sheri) Nugent, Davenport, IA, Terence (JoAnn) McDonnell, Oxford Junction, IA, John (Joellyn) McDonnell, DeWitt, IA, William (Elizabeth) McDonnell, LaGrange, IL. Joseph (Carmen) Nugent, Iowa City, IA, Daniel (Holly) Nugent, North Liberty, IA, James (Jennifer) Nugent, Peoria, AZ. A foster son, Tom Waters also survives. Ray is also survived by sixty-five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two sisters, Helen Franck, Moline, IL, and Jean Robaidek, Oregon, WI.

Besides his first wife, Ray was preceded in death by a son, William, his parents, four grandchildren, a brother and four sisters.

Visitation will be at SS Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound, from 3 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 23, 2006 with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2006 in the Church. The Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness celebrating. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Grand Mound. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Grand Mound Ball Club or SS Philip and James Catholic Church.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
