Eugene “Gene” McDonnell

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at Church of the Open Door, Clinton.

SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Lemke Funeral Homes, South Chapel, 2600 Lincoln Way, is in charge of arrangements.

CLINTON — Eugene “Gene” Joseph McDonnell, 79, of Clinton, died Sunday at his home.

Burial will be private.

He was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Clinton to John and Mary Dever McDonnell. He married Gloria Barth on Oct. 29, 1947, in Clinton.

He attended Lyons High School and graduated in 1945.

He worked with E.I. DuPont for 45 years. He also worked as a brick layer and mason.

He was an active member of Church of the Open Door. He was in a Bible study group. He also played in basketball leagues and coached basketball for 17 years.

Survivors include his wife; children, Nancy (Bill) Peart of Clinton, Debra (John) Monroe of DeWitt and Steven McDonnell of Clinton; two sisters, Natalie Reagan of Calamus and Rita Turner of Clinton; two brothers, Charles (Norma) McDonnell and Robert McDonnell, both of Clinton; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the youth center at the Church of the Open Door or Prince of Peace schools.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Death date: Aug. 20, 2006
