SERVICES: A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Grovehill Cemetery, Morrison, Ill.

DAVENPORT — Walter W. Gilbert Sr., 81, of Davenport and formerly of Savanna, Ill., died Monday at the Good Samaritan Center, Davenport.

He was born June 18, 1925, in Warroad, Minn., to Thomas James and Augusta Dambach Gilbert. He married Mary Sue Locey on Aug. 6, 1943, in Savanna. She died in 1998.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy, France.

He retired from the City of Savanna after 20 years as assistant superintendent of the water department.

He was a lifetime member and former commander of the Savanna Veterans of Foreign Wars serving in many positions and committees. He served in the Honor Guard at military funerals and community functions.

Survivors include one daughter, Sheryl Hamm of Moline, Ill.; two sons, Ronald Gilbert of Fort Madison and Walt (Leola) Gilbert Jr., of Renton, Wash.; daughters-in-law, Lori Gilbert of Lake Forest Park, Wash., and Doris Gilbert of Savanna; one brother, Pat (Poppy) Gilbert of Savanna; sisters-in-law, Judy Locey of Clinton, Elsie Turner of St. Germain, Wis., and Irene Locey of International Falls, Minn.; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Savanna VFW.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one son, one sister, one brother, five half sisters and one grandchild.
