Carl Louis “Luigi” Melchiorri

Carl Louis “Luigi” Melchiorri died Wednesday August 9, 2006 at the Alverno.

Services will be held at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home & Crematory on Saturday, August 12, 2006 at 10:30am. Visitation will be at Snell-Zornig on Friday August 11, 2006 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jody Minor, Lonny, Aaron, Ryan and Niki Melchiorri and Tyler Schrader.

He was born on September 20, 1920 in Pesaro, Italy to Arturo and Elisa (Cardineli) Melchiorri. He came to the United States in 1930 and lived in New London, Connecticut.

As a young man, he worked construction with his father, learning the art of handling dynamite and blasting for Benvenudi Construction. When World War II started, he worked for Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut building submarines. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and went overseas landing in Le Harve, France in the Combat Engineers. His unit was attached to many different divisions during the war including Patton’s 3rd Army. At the end of the war, he was a Mess Sergeant at Nuremberg, Germany during the War Crimes Trials.

He returned to the U.S. after the war, and married Margaret Jackson Holiday. Carl and Margaret were married on April 20, 1948 in Clinton, Iowa. Carl worked for E.I. Dupont for 32 years retiring in 1983.

Carl enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, boating to Coney Island, gardening, cooking, and drinking cheap Italian wine.

Carl is survived by his wife, Margaret of Clinton; 3 daughters, Connie Baker of Clinton; Carla (Steve) Schrader of Camanche; and Cindy (Randy) Gilbert of Clinton; 1 son, Ron (Ruthann) Melchiorri of Camanche; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and 1 sister, Lillian Radicioni of Waterford, CT.

Carl was preceded in death by 1 sister and his parents.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s association.
