Jens Carstensen was born Feb. 20, 1840 in Fethers harbor near the North Sea. At the age of eleven his folks brought him to America immigrating to Ohio, where they made their home for three years. In 1856, they moved to Clinton County where in 1864, Jens was married to Miss Caroline Keppien. Mr. Carstensen moved with his wife to Lyons where they were engaged for ten years in mercantile business, then moved to Goose Lake where they have made their home since. Here he served as city counsel for three years and people looked to him as an advisor. He was a straight, honest, upright and good man, the bible was his main study.
Mr. Carstensen suffered for over a year with Brights disease from which he died Jan. 4 at his home.
There remain to mourn his death, his wife, daughter and three grandchildren, a brother in Lyons and a sister, Mrs. Hansen living near DeWitt, Iowa
