Ethel Lorraine Sylvester was born on March 31, 1919, in Davenport, Iowa the daughter of John and Genevieve (Ruland) Sylvester. Ethel attended Davenport High School and later took a course in typing. In 1944, Ethel was united in marriage to Francis Seamer in Davenport. Together they moved to their farm near Moscow. Ethel loved many things about the farm, her chickens, kittens, dogs, gardening, canning and hunting mushrooms. Ethel had no children of her own, so she “adopted” others, leading Girl Scout troops and taking many kids fishing. In later years, after her husband passed away, Ethel wrote articles for the Muscatine Journal, under the pen name of Lorraine. She loved interviewing people and used one of the first Polaroid cameras. Lorraine’s advice to everyone is “Put your experiences down on paper. ‘Cause someone can always learn from them.”

Ethel is survived by one nephew, Carlie Seamer and his wife, Judy, of Clinton and two nieces. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Francis, one brother, Stanley and one sister, Edith.
