L. Mae Harkness

ELIZABETH, Ill. — L. Mae Harkness, 91, of Elizabeth and formerly of Hanover, Ill., died Wednesday at Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Burial will be in Log Church Cemetery, rural Hanover.

She was born May 18, 1915, to Warren and Luella Cook Sanderson in Rodden, Ill.

She attended Black School and graduated from Hanover High School in 1933.

She married Edward Raymond Patterson on March 29, 1934, in Galena, Ill. He died in 1980. She later married Harvey Harkness on March 6, 1982, in Hanover.

She was a homemaker and also worked six years in the rating department at Economy Insurance Co., Freeport, Ill.

She was a member, past president and an elder of Hanover Presbyterian Church. She was a member of United Presbyterian Women, Jo Daviess Home Bureau and volunteered as a leader with the 4-H Club of America.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith (Vincent) Vesely of Hanover and Shirley (Dale) Dodson of Hemingford, Neb.; two sons, Robert (Betty) Patterson and Richard (Deborah) Patterson, both of Hanover; one brother, Leland (Carol) Sanderson of Galena; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

A memorial fund has been established.
