Maria Brandenberg Thiede
(1855 – 1926)

The people of this community were grieved Monday morning when they learned of the death of Mrs. August Thiede of this city. While her death was not entirely unexpected, as she has been seriously ill for some time, it nevertheless caused many a lifelong friend to suffer the pangs of grief and sorrow.

She was one of Schleswig’s estimable ladies who loved her home life and her family and her greatest interest was the happiness of her children. She was a sympathetic friend and neighbor, a loving wife, and a devoted mother, and her death will be truly mourned, not only by her relatives, but by a large circle of friends.

Mary Thiede, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Brandenberg, was born 23 August 1855 in Pomern, Germany. At the age of eight years she came with her parents to America and lived in Clinton county, Iowa. On March 25, 1881 she was united in marriage to August Thiede. Later they moved to Wheeler township in Sac county, where they farmed for 31 years. 11 years ago they came to Schleswig, which place has since been their home. Eleven children were born to them, eight of whom are still living.

Mrs. Thiede died at har home here on the morning of 19 April 1926 at the age of 80 years and 8 months. She leaves her husband and eight children, who are Gustav of Boyer, Wm. of near Boyer; Henrietta, Mrs. Albert Baker of Schleswig; Otto of near Boyer; Louie on the home place in Sac county; Rosena, Mrs. Henry Brockmann of Schleswig; Frances at home and Lydia, Mrs. Louie Kastner of Morgan township. Also one sister, Mrs. August Henkel of Minnesota; one brother, John Berndenberg of DeWitt, Clinton county; 19 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren besides other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Thiede has been in poor health for many years, though at times would enjoy improvement brought about by medical aid and care. Since the fore part of December 1925 she suffered greatly with heart trouble, and although she seemed to be better for a time, an attack of grip brought on lung fever which hastened her end. Much was done by her husband and family to comfort and relieve her during her illness. Mrs. Thiede was a home loving wife and mother and a very sincere Christian.

Her funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Immanuel Lutheran church in this city, Rev Ed Firnhaber officiating; and at 3:30 in the Stockholm township Lutheran church. Interment followed at the Stockholm cemetery.
