Herman “Hermie” Behrends

Herman “Hermie” Behrends age 93, of Monticello, died Tuesday evening, July 11, 2006 at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 Saturday morning, July 15, 2006 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery with Military Honors. Friends may call from 4 until 8 Friday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. Rev. Ed Moreano will officiate at the services. Thoughts, Memories and Condolences may be left at www.goettschonline.com. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Monticello Veterans.

Surviving is his wife, Billie, 2 sons, Russ (Peggy), Jerry (Sherry) both of Monticello, five grandchildren, Shawn, Sherri, Brandee, Breanna, and Jesse, six great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren, and a brother, LaVern, Florence, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Wilma on May 16, 1983, his siblings and half-siblings, Fritz, Hank, Helen, Geroge, Otto, Ann, Ben, Clarence, Carl, Marie, Freida, Bill and Margaret.

Herman Edward Behrends was born November 22, 1912. He was the son of Benjamin and Margaret Lubben, Behrends. He received his early education in the Monticello Community Schools. Herman completed his education at age 58 when he completed his G.E.D. Herman served in the United States Army during WWII. He landed at Normandy, fighting through Northern France, the Battle of the Bulge and Rhineland. He operated a light mortar and also drove a half-track. On May 16, 1946 Herman married Wilma T. Bartels. The couple lived in Monticello where Herman was employed by Franklin Equipment for 26 years. In 1966 Herman went to work at the Iowa State Penitentiary in the Prison Industries as a trades leader. He later worked as a Correctional Officer. Herman retired in 1977. Herman married Wilhelmina “Billy” Bromley at the First Congregational Church on February 14, 1996. Herman was an active member of and past commander of the Monticello VFW Post #1683. He was a founding member of the Monticello Drill Team, and a charter member of AFSCME Council 61, Local 2994.

Herman was an active outdoorsman who loved spending time fishing, and hunting. He enjoyed making wine, smoking fish, playing cards, and spending time with family and his many friends.
