Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, with the Rev. Dennis Arndt officiating.

GRAND MOUND — Frances Helen Gross Chaon, 83, of Grand Mound, died Wednesday at home.

Burial will be at at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Mound.

She was born Jan. 4, 1923, in rural Clark County, S.D., to John and Tillie Bjerke Gross. She married Richard George Chaon on Nov. 8, 1942, in Davenport. He died in 1999.

She attended a rural country school and graduated from Bradley (S.D.) High School. She attended college in Aberdeen, S.D., and obtained a teaching certificate.

She taught in rural schools during World War II. Following World War II, she and her husband farmed in South Dakota until 1951 when they moved to Grand Mound. She worked as a nurse’s aid at DeWitt Community Hospital for many years, and also as a cook for the Central School District.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, where she was a former Sunday School superintendent, teacher and member of the Ladies Aid. She also was a member of the Grand Mound Legion Auxiliary. She was active in PTA and the Grand Mound Ball Club.

Survivors include a son, Ronald Chaon of Davenport; two daughters, Cindy (Daniel) Behr of Grand Mound and Molly (Vince) Sheridan of DeWitt; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace White of Clark, S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
