Dr. Jerome McAndrews

SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Prince of Peace Parish, Clinton. Lemke Funeral Homes, South Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Dr. Jerome McAndrews, 73, of Claremore and formerly of Clinton, died Friday in Tulsa, Okla.

He was born April 7, 1933, in Davenport to Patrick William and Ruth Louis Pelegrin McAndrews.

Following undergraduate work at the University of Iowa, he graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1956 and immediately entered private practice.

He was an internationally-renowned chiropractor responsible for the scientific and practical advancement of the study of chiropractic in the United States and abroad who, at the time of his death, served as vice president of Professional Affairs of the American Chiropractic Mutual Co.

In 1979, he was appointed president of Palmer College of Chiropractic, a position he held until 1987. He was named Chiropractor of the Year in 1973, received an honorary doctorate of humanities in 1980 from Palmer College of Chriropractic and was named president of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges in 1981. During and following his tenure at Palmer College of Chiropractic and throughout his career, which spanned 50 years, he was an advocate, lecturer, author and national spokesman for greater research in the field.

His numerous appearances before Congress resulted in unprecedented recognition and changes in the law including chiropractic inclusion in Medicare and other insurance programs, as well as broader acceptance in state licensing. He holds the distinction of having developed the concept of motion palpation, which is widely recognized and used in the chiropractic profession. He acted as a hub of communications for professional and consumer journals.

Survivors include five daughters, Jennifer and Andria, both of Claremore, Stacy of Kansas City, Mo., Laura of Princeton, Iowa, and Kathleen of Raymond, N.H.; one son, Patrick of Wheaton, Ill.; 23 grandchildren; one sister, Monica Lahey of Greenwich, Conn.; and three bothers, George McAndrews of Barrington, Ill., Tom of Ponta Vedra, Fla., and David of Centreville, Del.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the NCMIC Foundation, NCMIC Group Inc., 14001 University Avenue, Clive, IA 50325, c/o McAndrews Memorial Research Fund.
