Visitation: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Camanche Chapel of the Snell-Zornig Funeral Home.

SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Dr. Donald Batz officiating.

CAMANCHE — Carter “Doug” Hewer, 70, of Camanche, died Wednesday at his home.

Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Lanny Kruse, Jim Nichols, David Barker, Eric Gasper, Guy McCausland and Wilson Bull.

He was born May 19, 1935, in rural Grand Mound to John and Margaret Henzen Hewer. He married Diora “Dee” Shaffer on Aug. 15, 1955, in Liberty, Ind.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956.

He was an automobile mechanic and automotive body technician. He founded and operated Clinton Alignment Brake and Muffler in 1972 and semi-retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Morrison (Ill.) Model Aircraft Flyers.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Pam (Phil) Shaw of Clinton; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Linda (Leon) Gasper of Calamus; one brother, Robin (Joyce) Hewer of Lost Nation; two aunts, Florence Rohr of Camanche and Helen Frakes of Galesburg, Ill.; several cousins, nieces, nephews; and father-in-law, the Rev. H.C. (Sarah) Shaffer of Vinton.

The family requests that memorials be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church’s Building Fund, Morrison Model Aircraft Flyers, Clinton Parkinson Support Group or a charity of the donor’s choice.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, one sister and his mother-in-law.
