CLINTON — Myron Weil, 87, of Clinton, died Tuesday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born on April 17, 1918, in Lincoln, Neb., to Julius and Fannie Livingston Weil. He married Pauline “Polly” M. Clayton on Sept. 25, 1945, in Honolulu. She died in January.

He was a 1935 graduate of Lincoln High School. He then attended the University of Nebraska from 1935 to 1936. In September of 1936, he entered Yale University, Sheffield Scientific School, and graduated in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in applied economics science. He also graduated from the Wisconsin School of Banking.

After graduation in 1939, he was employed with the National Bank of Commerce, Lincoln, in the proof department.

He served in the U.S. Army from December 1941 until he was discharged in March 1946, attaining the rank of major. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Service, American Service and Victory medals.

After being discharged from the military he returned to the National Bank of Commerce, working in the installment loan department. He became manager of that department and later senior loan officer, executive vice president and member of the board of directors and executive committee of that bank.

In 1967 he moved to Clinton and became president and chief executive officer of First National Bank and executive vice president of Hawkeye Bankcorp, which grew from three banks to 36 banks during his service. He also served as permanent chairman of the Hawkeye Loan Committee, which oversaw all overlines of loans and writing all policy and procedure in connection with loans. In 1978, he received the title certified commercial lender from the American Bankers Association. He retired from that position in 1983, but remained on the First National Bank and Hawkeye board for several years. During his retirement, he worked for the American Bankers Association for seven years calling on banks in western Illinois and eastern Iowa as a Member Relations Consultant. He also maintained substance abuse statistics for Clinton and kept the financial books for the Clinton Substance Abuse Council.

He also was an Eagle Scout, member of Troop 41, was awarded the Silver Beaver and served on the Cornhusker Council for many years. He served as president of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and president of the Lincoln United Way. He served on the Board of Lincoln Foundation and the University of Nebraska Foundation and was a member of the Cyclars. He helped start the Eagle Point Nature Society, Clinton County Mental Health Association, CEG, Maternal Services (now Women’s Health Services), Character Counts and the Clinton Substance Abuse Council. He served on the Jane Lamb Hospital Board and served as president of its holding company. While on the board, he served on the committee that facilitated the merger of Jane Lamb Hospital and Mercy Medical Center. He served on the boards of Junior Achievement, Illowa Council, Boy Scouts, Clinton Area Development Corp. and was a former two-term president for the Paul B. Sharar Foundation for Clinton Community College. He was a member of Rotary for more than 50 years and lifetime member of the Robert Morris Association. He was a member of the Clinton Country Club and 29 Club for many years. He also served on the Riverview Park Commission. He was voted “Boss of the Year” by the Clinton Jaycees in 1970 and by the American Business Women’s Association in 1979. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He also was a 50-year member of the Masons and Scottish Rite Bodies.

Survivors include three daughters, Michele Scott of Clinton, Judy Weil of San Diego and Mrs. Layla (Sterling) Stuhldryer of Clinton; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Peggy) Weil of Portland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Mercy Healthcare Foundation.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister.
