Sister Louise Higdon

Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m Sunday at the Canticle, 841 13th Ave. North, third floor. Scripture service at 6:30 p.m. and rosary at 3:30 p.m. Lemke Funeral Homes, North Chapel, is handling arrangements.

SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Canticle Chapel with the Rev. Anthony Herold officiating.

CLINTON — Sister Louise Higdon, OSF, 97, of the Alverno Health Care Facility, died Thursday at Mercy North Hospital.

Burial will be in the St. Irenaeus Cemetery, Clinton.

Pallbearers will be relatives, friends and members of the Sisters of St. Francis.

She was born April 18, 1908, in Grinnell to Louis E. and Catherine Ann Devereux Higdon.

She attended elementary school in rural Grinnell. She attended Grinnell public schools and graduated from the Mount St. Clare Academy, Clinton. She received an A.A. degree from Mount St. Clare College and a Bachelor of Science degree from DePaul University, Chicago. She also attended Loyola University, Chicago; the National Teachers College, Evanston, Ill.; and University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. She received an Iowa advanced elementary teaching certificate.

She joined the Sisters of St. Francis on Oct. 4, 1927. Her final vows were taken April 17, 1933.

She was a kindergarten and primary teacher for more than 50 years. She taught at St. Patrick’s School, Clinton, for 20 years and also served as a methods instructor and critic teacher at Mount St. Clare College in the teacher-training program. She also taught in Varina, Denison, Chicago and Reedley, Calif. She also served as a part time staff member of the Clinton Catholic Kindergarten Program at Mount St. Clare and Sacred Heart School. She also was known for her hugs ministry.

She retired to the Mount St. Clare Convent in 1984. She then moved to the Alverno Health Care Facility in 1994.

Survivors include two brothers, James and John, both of Grinnell; and one sister, Mrs. Mildred (Paul) Schmitz of Rockwell City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.
