Lawrence “Whitey” Bell

CAMANCHE — Lawrence A. “Whitey” Bell, 82, of Camanche, died Monday at the Eagle Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clinton.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Camanche Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the Camanche VFW.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Jefferds Jr., Nathan Bell, Shane Ellison, Jennie Bell Ellison, Ryan, Sean and Ethan Davis, Zachary Lawrence, Tyler and Ashley Ploog, Laurie Lawrence and Lisa Nichol.

He was born March 11, 1923, in Albany, Ill., to Arthur E. and Margaret Ven Huizen Bell. He married Wilma Goddard on Jan. 2, 1945, in Chicago.

He graduated from Clinton High School in 1941.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked with Collis Co. and Dairy Pak. He also was an electrician with Local 145, Rock Island, Ill., before retiring in 1989.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Camanche, where he was a choir member, deacon and trustee. He also did volunteer work at the community center in Camanche.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Janet Hayes of York, Pa., Mrs. Barbara (Thomas) Jefferds of North Carolina and Mrs. Beverly (Francis) Davis of Camanche; one son, David (Rebecca) Bell of Westerville, Ohio; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Leona (Carl) Carlsen of Clinton; and one brother, Robert (Janet) Bell of Paradise, Calif.

Memorials may be made to the Eagle Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, First Baptist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.
