Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Klahn, residents of Wheatland and vicinity for seventy years, celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their home here on Saturday, February 13, 1932.

Mr. and Mrs. Klahn were the guests of honor at a seven o’clock dinner and splendid program given them in Legion hall Friday evening by the ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary. The remainder of the evening was open to the public, and about two hundred friends gathered and passed the evening dancing to music by the Melody Aces of Clinton.

Saturday the Klahn home was made an open house to all friends who were well entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Klahn, their children and grandchildren. Sunday a family dinner was served to all members of the immediate family who were able to be present. A huge three-tier wedding cake, decorated with a golden wedding bell and fifty candles formed the centerpiece for the table loaded with good things. Mr. and Mrs. Klahn were the happy recipients of many gifts from their children, grandchildren, relatives and friends.

Andrew Klahn was born Jan. 29, 1860 in Moline, Ill., and came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Klahn, to a farm four miles north of Wheatland on Jan. 27, 1861. He attended school at Toronto until he was sixteen, and worked on the farm during his boyhood.

Mrs. Klahn, nee Emma Bentrott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bentrott, was born Sept. 15, 1862, on a farm three miles northwest of Wheatland.

They were married at Wheatland on Feb 13, 1882, by Justice Jerome P. Dutton, and have made this place their home for over fifty years. Mr. Klahn worked for the Chicago & North-Western R’y, Co. for over 35 years, and for 26 years was section foreman here, being retired from that position and placed on the company’s pension roll on June 1, 1927.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Klahn are in good health and enjoy making regular visits to their children and families. Mrs. Klahn is an active member of the Legion Auxiliary, and Mr. Klahn was a charter member of the Wheatland Volunteer Fire Co., being placed on the list of honorary members several years ago. He was much pleased to receive a visit from the firemen in a body on Saturday evening, at which time he was presented with a box of cigars and his wife with a box of candy.

They have seven children living, namely, Herman Klahn of Perham, Minn., Mrs. Richard Parr, Fred Klahn and Mrs. Alfred G. Meier of Clinton, Arthur Klahn of Cedar Rapids, Walter Klahn and Miss Dora Klahn of Wheatland. One son Herbert died several years ago at the age of eighteen. There are also ten grandchildren, Eileen Klahn and Mrs. B. H. Hassler of Perham, Minn., Irmal Parr, Billy and Lewis Klahn, Sylvin and Florence Meier, all of Clinton, Irma Mae Klahn of Cedar Rapids, and Dale and W. Junior Klahn of Wheatland.

All children and grandchildren were here to help their parents celebrate except Arthur Klahn, wife and daughter Irma Mae of Cedar Rapids, who were prevented by sickness, and Mrs. B. H. Hassler of Perham, Minn.

Others present from out of town were Russell Cook of Chicago, Mrs. C. L. Cook, Kenneth Murphy, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wilke, Miss Verna Mae Waring [Vining], Mr. and Mrs. Ole Olson, Mrs. Anna Cook, William Mess and Lawrence Bentrott of Clinton, Herbert Folk [Foltz] of Perham, Minn., Miss Julia Simmons and Emil Hass of Rock Island, Mrs. Johann Steen, Mrs. Alma Steen and John Metzger of Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ahrens of Cedar Rapids.

The many old time Wheatland friends of Mr. and Mrs. Klahn who are living at a distance, will be pleased to know that the years have been kind to this most worthy couple and the photos published above, by the courtesy of the Clinton Herald, were taken just a couple of weeks ago.

To Mr. and Mrs. Klahn are tendered the sincere wishes of the Gazette and friends that they may celebrate many more such happy anniversaries together
