The Last Will & Testament of Isaac D. Newell
Monday, October 26, 1857
In the name of God Amen, I Isaac D. Newell of the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, being weak in body, but sound and perfect memory, blessed be Almighty God for the same, do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to day.
First, after the payment of all my honest debts, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Cecilia E. Newell all of my household furniture and personal property, except what may be hereinafter

especially exempted and one third of all my real estate, situated in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa. Her title to the same being in fee simple. To her sole and separate use, and free from the interference or control of any person whatever, and designed to include all her right of dower in the premises.Secondly, I do also give and bequeath to my only son Isaac D. Newell, Jr. a title in fee simple to our half of all my remaining real estate in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa. To have & to hold to him his heirs and xxxxxx forever.
Thirdly, I do also give and bequeath to my daughter Harriet Green Bulkley wife of Justice Bulkley of Carrolton, Illinois one fourth of all my real estate situated in Clinton County, Iowa remaining after the one third received by my wife Cecilia Newell as above, to have and to hold the same to her sale and separate use and to her heirs and xxxxxxx forever.
Fourthly, I do will and bequeath to my youngest daughter Sarah Jane Flanagin wife of Joseph L. Flanagin of Bunker Hill, Illinois, one fourth of all my real estate situated in Clinton County Iowa remaining after the one third received by my wife Cecilia E. Newell as aforesaid. To have and to hold the same to her sole and separate use, and to her heirs and xxxx forever.
Fifthly, I do will and bequeath to my Grand daughter, Sarah Ellen Bulkley daughter of Justice and Harriet Bulkley of Carrolton, Illinois one hundred dollars to be paid before the forgoing division of my real estate is made among my children.
Sixthly, I do will and bequeath one hundred dollars to my Grand daughter Frances Newell Bulkley, daughter of Justice and Harriet Bulkley to be paid before the forgoing division of my real estate is made among my children.
Seventhly, I do will and bequeath to my three children, Harriet Green Bulkley of Carrolton, Illinois and Sarah Jane Flanagin of Bunker Hill, Illinois and Isaac D. Newell, Jr. of Clinton County Iowa all of my library after permiting my wife Cecilia E. Newell to select what books she may desire, said Library to be equally divided according to value among my three children as aforesaid.
And Lastly, I hereby appoint my son-in-law Justus Burkley of Carrolton, Illinois and my son Isaac D. Newell Jr. of Clinton county Iowa sole executors of this my last Will & Testament, hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 13th day of August AD 1857.

Sealed, signed and delivered by the above named Isaac D. Newell to be his last Will and Testament, in the presence of us who at his request, and in his presence have subscribed our names as witness thereto.

I, Loring Wheeler, clerk of the county court for said county, do hereby certify that the foregoing will was this day duly process in open court by the subscribing witnesses thereto , xxxxx. A. L. Richard and Salmon Richard.Note: There is a huge black spot on the this page that prevents me from reading any further information about this will except that it was recorded in DeWitt, Clinton County in 1857.
