Last Will and Testament of James Conlin

In the name of God Amen;
I James Conlin of Lyons Township in the County of Clinton and State of Iowa of the age of Sixty five years and being of sound mind and memory wishing to arrange my worldly affairs do make ordain publish and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner following: After all my lawful debts are paid I will and direct

1st. That the executor of my will expend for my funeral and for the erection of a suitable monument over my grave a sum not to exceed three hundred sixty (360) Dollars.

2nd. That the Executor of my will apply the sum of two hundred (200) dollars for Masses to be read for the repose of my soul and that of my departed wife.

3rd. I give and bequeath to the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lyons for the sum of one Hundred (100) dollars.

4th. I give and bequeath to the Trustees of St. Iraneaus Roman Catholic Church in Lyons Iowa the sum of three hundred (300) to be employed by them towards the erection of a new altar in said Church if not already erected, otherwise to be expended by them for other legitimate purposes connected with the said Church.

5th. I give and bequeath to my brother Patrick Conlin the sum of five hundred (500) dollars.

6th. I give and bequeath to Rebecka Hendrick sister of my deceased wife the sum of three hundred and fifty (35) dollars.

7th. I will and direct that the Executor of my will expend the sum of twenty four (24) dollars for masses to be read for the repose of the souls of the following named persons to wit: Edward Bowen and Bridget Bowen, James Conlin and Ann Colin, Eugene Conlin and Margaret Conlin, John Conlin and William Conlin.

8th. I here by appoint my friend Patrick Lenaghan of Lyons Iowa sole executor of this my last Will and Testament and authorize him to act as such without giving bond and he is further hereby authorized to settle my estate in any manner he sees fit and to sell any and all of the real estate which I may own at the time of decease whether situated in the State of Iowa or in any other State of the Union and to make execute and deliver to the purchaser or purchasers thereof good and sufficient Deeds of Conveyance without any proceedings in Court.

9th. And lastly I give and bequeath all the rest of my property which maybe left after paying all the bequests made under and by #1 to 7 of this will to the Trusties of said Iraneaus Catholic Church in Lyons Iowa to be employed by them in the first place towards the erection of said main altar in the said Church or if that should have been built towards any other legitimate object connected with said Church.

The foregoing instrument was at the day of the date thereof signed and declared by the said James Conlin as and for his last Will and Testament in presence of us who at his request and in his presence have hereunto signed our names as witnesses thereto.

I William Kreim, clerk of the District Court in and for said County do hereby certify that on this day at the April Term A. D. 1888 of said Court the will and instrument in writing hereunto annexed and bearing date in the 30th day of November 1887 was duly proved before and allowed by said court as and for the last will and testament of the real and personal estate of James Conlin late of said County deceased and was by said Court ordered to be recorded as such will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto at my hand and affixed the seal of the court at my office in Clinton in said County this 20th day of April A. D. 1888.
