Van Allen Dr. and Mrs. Frank Otho Kershner, 600 Argyle court, announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Elizabeth Jane, to John Bevier Van Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick H. Van Allen, 844 Fifth avenue South. The wedding will take place at noon Friday Feb. 3 in the First Presbyterian church, in the presence of the immediate families of the young couple. The pastor, the Rev. Bruce McCullough, will officiate.

Nelson entertained guests last evening in her home, 229 Sixth avenue, North, at a prenuptial courtesy complimenting Miss Elizabeth Kershner, who is to wed John B. Van Allen next month. Yellow prevailed throughout the service of the menu and for the dainty table appointments. Beneath a bridal arch of acacia blossoms and fernery as the central thought was a miniature bridal party in formal array on duo-mirrored plaque. A large yellow tulle bow designated Miss Kershner’s chair. Bridal dolls were favors. Bridge honors for the evening, received by Mrs. R.E. Bickelhaupt and Miss Dorothy Smith, ere presented to the bride elect, along with beautiful gifts from the guests for her new home.
The Clinton Herald Saturday January 28, 1939 p. 3 Pretty Luncheon and Evening Party Honors Miss Elizabeth Kershner Two more lovely pre-nuptial courtesies were accorded Miss Elizabeth Kershner this week, pending her marriage Feb. 3 to John B. Van Allen. Miss Margaret Conlon entertained at her home, 728 Fifth avenue South, Friday afternoon at a beautifully appointed luncheon. The twelve guests were seated at a table adorned with a low bowl of Sweetheart roses, with miniature bride and bridegroom place cards, and a gardenia corsage designating the guest of honor’s place. Mrs. John N. Klopp and Mrs. Albert Peltzer received the bridge honors, and a special gift was presented to Miss Kershner by the charming hostess.
Miss Lyman Entertains Miss Mary Allus Lyman entertained informally Thursday evening in her apartment, 437 Fifth avenue South, at a magazine shower for Miss Kershner. Tripoli was played with honors going to the bride-elect, Mrs. R.E. Bickelhaupt and Miss Helen Haugh, the latter two presenting their trophies to Miss Kershner. Kershner, became the bride of John B. Van Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Van Allen. The Rev. Bruce McCullough officiated at the service in First Presbyterian church. After a trip to Mexico City, Mexico, they will live at 1206 Second avenue, South.
Elizabeth Jane Kershner and John B. Van Allen Wed Today In First Presbyterian Church Stately simplicity marked the wedding of Miss Elizabeth Jane Kershner, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Frank O. Kershner, 600 Argyle court, to John Bevier Van Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick H. Van Allen, 844 Fifth avenue, South, which took place at 12 o’clock noon today in the First Presbyterian church. The minister, the Rev. Bruce McCullough, officiated at the ceremony in the presence of the immediate families of the young couple. The front section of the pews was screened from the main part of the church by drapings of southern smilax, and in the chancel were palms and two large baskets filled with Easter lilies. Mrs. W.H. Bardwell offered a nuptial organ recital before the “Bridal Chorus” from Lohengren was sounded. Her program included “Romance,” Sibelius, “Andantino,” Bizet-Guilmant, “Ich Liebe Dich,” Grieg, “Cantilene Nuptiale,” Dubois, and “At Dawning by Cadman. Mrs. H.H. Hobart sang “Because” by d’Hardelot before the vows were spoken. For the recessional Mrs. Bardwell played Mendelssohn’s wedding march. Miss Kershner, who was escorted to the altar and given in marriage by her father, Dr. Kershner, wore her mother’s bridal model of fiat ivory satin, which also was worn last September by her sister, Frances, at her wedding when she became the bride of Robert E. Bickelhaupt. The gown was fashioned along princess lines, lace draped bodice, with elbow length sleeves and panel court length train. The long illusion veil encircled her head and fell in soft folds beyond the train. Her only jewel worn was a diamond pendant, the gift of the bridegroom, and her flowers were a shower bouquet of Belmont gardenias. Mrs. Robert Bickelhaupt, sister of the bride and her maid of honor, wore a sky blue starched chiffon gown with short puffed sleeves. The skirt was bouffant and floor length. She wore a matching blue net draped turban and carried a blue net muff adorned with a spray of Ruben lilies. Edward H. Henning of Milwaukee, Wis., served as Mr. Van Allen’s best man. The ushers were John N. Klopp and Robert E. Bickelhaupt. Mrs. Kershner chose for her daughter’s wedding a black sheer gown with paisley trimmings and her flowers were a shoulder corsage of Hollywood roses. Mrs. Van Allen, mother of the bridegroom, wore a black velvet suit with gardenia corsage. A wedding breakfast for the bridal party and immediate relatives was served in the Oak room of the Lafayette hotel. Small tables centered with white hyacinths were grouped around the long bridal table, which was graced with a tiered wedding cake and long plaques of Killarney roses at each end. Mr. and Mrs. Van Allen have left on a wedding trip to Mexico City, Mexico. For traveling Mrs. Van Allen wore a becoming beige basket weave suit with fox fur collar and matching had, a blouse of dusty pink. After March 25 they will be at home at 1206 Second avenue South. The bride was graduated from Clinton High school and attended Grinnell college at Grinnell. Mr. Van Allen, who is assistant merchandise manager with John D. Van Allen & Son Inc., was graduated in 1931 from Shattuck Military academy, Faribault, Minn., and from the University of Virginia in 1935.
