Liquor and Horse Thieves

Sometime after midnight, on Saturday night, burglars entered the wholesale liquor store of Chas. Koehter, on First Avenue, and rolled out two packages of gin, one containing 40 and the other containing 20 gallons. They were loaded into a cutter, stolen from the stable of the Farmers’ Home, and belonging to Mr. W. B. Hazzard, of Lyndon. The burglar’s then stole a team of horses, belonging to Mr. Charles Upton, of Albany, Ill., and drove off with their liquor booty. Officer Leaden discovered the burglary, early Sunday morning, and a search was at once instituted for the missing property. A posse of officers under the direction of the Sheriff, scoured the county for miles around, and succeeded in finding the team, tied to a fence on the Ravine Road, beyond Seeser & Lauer’s Brewery, where the burglar’s experienced a smashup. The cutter was also found in a damaged condition. In the center was found a full barrel of gin, and subsequently the remainder of the liquor was found in a culvert near Mayor Price’s brick yard. There is no clue to the burglars.
