A Liberal Settlement – Undoubtedly there are railroad corporations who have no soul. But in this list it will not do to place the Chicago & Northwestern. In evidence of which we have the pleasure of relating the following incident of recent date: Last summer Frank Baker, residing in this city and in the employ of the C. & N. W. road as a freight brakeman, was thrown off a box car, by reason of a defective brake, and so injured as to requite the amputation of one foot, just above the ankle. In a settlement with the young man, the company itself made the offer which was accepted, to wit, to pay Baker $8,000 in cash to learn him the telegraph business – an furnish him employment on the road. The company also paid his expenses while under the surgeons care and also gave him three months salary.
