John and Eliza J. Turner Thomas were natives of Ohio and came to DeWitt Township in 1839. They had five children, three girls and two boys. Nancy was born in Harrison County, Ohio on January 5, 1937; she married John Spaulding.
Sarah was married to Lewis M. Hahn on August 22, 1861. Lewis was born on December 9, 1837 in Holstein, Germany and died in DeWitt, in July, 1911. He came to this country in 1855, landing in New York. From there he went to Baltimore, where he was employed for several years. They had seven children: Leonard married Maude Braughton of DeWitt; they had two children that died at birth. Anna married Edward Miller of Grand Mound, Iowa; they had two children: Evert born December 9, 1893, and Aletha born about three years later. They lived at Washta, South Dakota, and later at Portland, Oregon. Amy was a maiden school teacher and never married. Laura married Charles A. Gray, a native of Clinton County, Iowa; they went to Highmore, South Dakota and later to McAllen, Texas. They had three or four children. Jane married Stanley Meyers at DeWitt; they had one daughter, Clela. They lived in Des Moines where Stanley was a street car conductor. (Clela married and had one child).
The names of their other children are not known. Eliza passed away at DeWitt; John stayed in DeWitt Township until the spring of 1886, when he moved to Woodbury County (Cushing). John married a second time and had two children: Olive who married Lou Olson, and Mary "Mollie" who married John McCoy.
John passed away March 1890, and is buried in the old Methodist Cemetery, which was in the northeast corner of the southeast corner of the section 6, east of Cushing. The cemetery was a triangular piece of ground just north of the former NorthWestern Railroad right-of-way. The land for this cemetery was donated by C.W. Sawyer, a former banker of Cushing.
