Alfred R. Nickel of Clinton, was a son of Alexander and Elizabeth (---) Nickel. Alexander R. Nickel was a son of Alexander R. and Elizabeth (---) Nickel of Delaware Twp, Mercer Co, PA. The son, Alexander R. Nickel Jr, was named in his father's probate as living in Iowa in 1869. He appeared in the 1860 census living in Sabula, Union Twp, Jackson Co, IA with his wife Elizabeth and son Alfred. Alexander R. Nickel probably died sometime before 1880 when Alfred R. Nickel (spelled "Nichols") was living with his mother Elizabeth and his step-father, Calden G. Hoyt in Clinton, Clinton Co, IA. Guy Calden Hoyt died 9 Jan 1890 and is buried in the Springdale Cemetery, Clinton, IA. In 1901, his widow Elizabeth Hoyt was living with her son Alfred R. Nickel at 1215-3rd St, in Clinton (city directory). Elizabeth Hoyt died 16 Jul 1904 and is buried with her second husband in the Springdale Cemetery. In 1880, Alfred Nickel was listed in the census as beginning a railroad brakeman. In 1887 directory, he was listed as a Conductor.
