Thanks for the follow-up. I *think* Elizabeth Thompson may be Elise Thomson or Thoms, listed in the household of her brother John in the 1856 census, age 23 years, in Volga township. Her father Johann, step-mother, and brothers immigrated in 1853 with a group of others from the same area in Mecklenburg who all came to Clayton County. Her father had apparently died by 1856 since he isn't in the household in that year, and the step-mother remarried in 1859 to August Wimmer of Guttenberg, and is listed there in the 1860 census.
This is just a guess since there aren't many people in Clayton County with a surname like Thomson/Thompson who were from Mecklenburg, and I see that is given as her place of birth in either the 1860 or 1870 census. I also see a Joseph Meyer or Myre in Guttenberg in 1856, of the right age, although his occupation at that time isn't butcher, but if that's him, it would explain that they were in somewhat close proximity around the time of their marriage.
If you want more information on this Thomson family, please email me. The surname in German church records in the Eldena parish was Thoms. I'm not related to the families, but have been curious about this Thomson/Thoms family since coming upon them. I haven't been able to find what happened to this Elise Thomson's brothers: John (who married apparently in Iowa had two children by 1860), Christian, Carl, and August. Nor do I know what became of the step-mother after her second husband died in 1866. The step-mother was Maria or Dorothea Elisabeth Meyer, and she had one brother Heinrich Meyer (1824-1886) who ended up at Postville with descendants in that area. Maria/Dorothea Elisabeth herself seems to have had no children by either marriage.
The mother of Elise Thomson/Thoms was Catharina Elisabeth Dorothea Palm who died in Eldena parish in 1845. Johann Thomson then remarried later that year to Dorothea Elisabeth (or Maria) Meyer.
This is becoming confusing, but that's due in part to the multiple marriages. And again: I'm just guessing at connecting your Elizabeth Thompson to this Elise Thomson/Thoms.
