DOROTHY L. BYINGTON, age 94 passed away [in Tennessee] peacefully, May 26, 2011. She was born in Marquette, Iowa February 12, 1917 and was a daughter to John R and Eva Knoebel. She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Nelson Byington as well as her brother, Jimmie Knoebel and sister, Dora Spolnik. She is survived by her sons Robert (Edith) and John (Kathy); Additional surviving family includes Pat (Roger) Hale, Jack (Marg) Knoebel and Betty Hoeschele from Illinois and Billie (Ray) Ozark of Connecticut. She has four grandchildren and multiple great grandchildren. She was a "grandmother" to many.
Dorothy taught school with an emergency, temporary certificate in Arkansas and Iowa from 1943-1949. She earned her teaching degree from Eastern Oregon College of Education in 1955.
Dorothy taught for over 30 years initially in Arkansas and then in Oregon in Wasco, Warm Springs, Metolious and Madras. Much of her career was teaching Culver's second grade class.She was an avid reader and she enjoyed travel to numerous domestic locations. She had many adventures out of country including trips to Canada, Europe and Australia. When home she enjoyed the view of five snow covered Oregon mountains that she could see from her kitchen window. Family wishes to thank all of the McKendree staff who provided comfort and care to Dorothy. A Remembrance Gathering / Celebration of Life is scheduled for July 24, 2011. It will be held at the Hermitage Memorial Gardens starting at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution in her name to any public library.

Dora M. Spolnik, age 81 of Lansing, IL, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2009. She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy (late Nelson) Byington, Evelyn (late William) Haeschele, Billie Jean (Ray) Ozark, and Pat (Roger) Hale; brothers, Jack (Marguerite) Knoebel, and late Jim (Donna) Knoebel; cousins of Evelyn (late George) Oslager, Sherry (Sam) Camerano, Karen (Russ) Boyk, Paul (Jennifer) Oslager; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband, Richard in June, 1994. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009, 10 a.m. at Schroeder Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Rd, Lansing, IL with the Pastor Jeremy Heilman officiating. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, IL. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, April 3, 2009 from 3 - 8 pm at the funeral home. Mrs. Spolnik was as a retired supervisor for 45 years at U S Steel South Works in Chicago, IL, longtime Secretary Treasurer for the Pension Supervisor Social Club of US Steel. Mrs. John (Eva) Knoebel, 79, formerly of Marquette, died Thursday, April 19, 1979, St. Francis Hospital Medical Center, Hartford, Conn. Funeral Services were conducted Tuesday at 1:30 pm in Thornburg Funeral Home, McGregor, By the Rev. Oliver Larkin, pastor of the McGregor Untied Methodist and Congregational churches. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jack Knoebel, Jim Knoebel, Bill Hoeschele, Rich Spolnik, Ray Ozark, and Roger Hale.The former Eva Winegar was born July 26, 1899, in North McGregor, now Marquette, the daughter of Fred and Alice Winegar. She was married to John Knoebel, who preceded her in death in 1965. Surviving are two sons, Jimmie of Bensonville, Ill., and John of Chicago; five daughters, Mrs. Dora Spolnik of Calumet City, Ill., Mrs. Billie Ozark of West Hartford Conn., Mrs. Betty Hoeschele of Forest Park, Ill., Mrs. Dorothy Byington of Culver, Ore. and Patricia Hale of Chicago; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Zahn of McGregor and Mrs. Edna Sjulli of Renton, Wash.
