Gertrude Stringer Birth Record from 1876

I'm trying to locate a birth record for my Great Grandmother:

Gertrude Ann Stringer
14 Jul 1876
Independence, Iowa or Strawberry Point
Clayton County

I can't seem to locate any records prior to 1880. Any advice on where to look would be helpful.
