In Response To: marriage and death records (cleone)

Hi Cleone,
"Official" government death reporting/records were not required in Iowa until mid-1880. There was no penalty for non-reporting, so they are sporatic and incomplete until the 1920's. For more info. about Iowa/Clayton co. death records please read this FAQ page:
http://www.sharylscabin.com/Clayton/deathrec/deathrecords_faq.htm

The records we currently have for Clayton co. back to the 1850's are obits, the 1850 Mortality schedule, some church records & gravestone records. Links to these records can be found on the main Clayton co. IAGenWeb home page (link below) under the heading "Death Records".

Clayton co. marriage records are more complete. The index to marriage records is here:
http://www.sharylscabin.com/Clayton/marriage/marriage_index.htm
