Helen,
The photographer, Herman J. Birkholz, had a studio in Colesburg, Delaware co. roughly from 1895-1910. He appears on the 1895 Iowa State census and the 1900 Federal census in Colesburg, but by the 1910 Federal census had moved to Dubuque, where he continued to work as a photographer.Although I am very much an amateur at dating photographs, it has become somewhat of a hobby for me. In my opinion, your photo was likely taken between 1895 and 1910, and appears to be of a middle-aged man or perhaps even as young as 25-30 (it's hard to tell). His outer coat has the large, edged lapels that were the style during that time-period as well, although he likely wasn't a man who followed fashion since he is wearing a work shirt under his jacket and coat.
By 1895, the John Schwighert in the 1882 biography would have been a much older man than the person in the photo (he was already aged 56 by 1882) Perhaps one of John's sons?
