I found another great article on the Iowa History site, for those interested in early Iowa travel
http://iagenweb.org/history/moi/moi28.htm

The Iowa History Project has many other articles on the subject that can be found by browsing the site or by using the search engine on the main index page. Some information can also be found on the Clayton co. IAGenWeb site.

On a personal note, I'm fortunate to have a letter, written by my ggg-grandmother, telling of her journey to Iowa in 1863. She and her brother traveled from NY state to Clayton co. Iowa by boat on the St. Lawrence river, by sleigh to their next stop, by railroad to Prairie du Chien, crossed the Mississippi river on an ice boat to McGregor, and finally took a covered wagon and stage coach to Giard and on to Hardin (where she lived for the next 75 years). She wrote that the entire journey took 10 days.
