Clayto County Register, Thur., 21 Feb. 1929.

After an illness of a few months, George Meyer, a former resident of Motor, and one of the few remaining Veterans of the Civil War, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gusta Vogel, in Mason City, Iowa, on Wednesday, February 13th, 1929, at 4 o'clock in the morning, at the good old age of 87 years, two months and twenty days.

The subject of this sketch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerhardt Meyer, was born in Germany, November 23rd 1841. When he was twelve years old, the family came to America. After residing in the State of Ohio for a few years, they came to Iowa in 1856, and settled in Communia, Clayton County. As a young man, he faithfully served his country during the Civil War. Having received his honorable discharge, he came back home, and for some years was employed in the store at Communia.

On February 6th, 1878, he was married in Elkader to Mrs. Mary Eleonora Craft, nee Venus, who had lost her first husband on the battlefield of the Civil War. The couple moved on a farm in Motor, which continued to be their home for many years. Seven children were born to this union, of which one son, Louis, died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Lulu Elstead, passed away in 1901.

On Sept. 27th, 1912, the wife and mother was called to the Great Beyond. After this Mr. Meyer remained on the home place for a few years; but since the home was broken up, and as the infirmities of advanced years were felt more and more, it was deemed advisable to make a change. So for the last nine nine years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Gusta Vogel, in Mason City Iowa, where he received the best of care in his declining years, and especially during the time of sickness.

He is survived by five children: Mrs. Gusta Vogel, Mason City; Joe Meyer, of Communia; Max Meyer, of Garnavillo; Edward Meyer, of Mason City; and Mrs. Leonora Beckmann, of Littleport. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and other relatives and many friends and old time neighbors.

The mortal remains were brought here on Friday and taken to the home Christ Meyer, where funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, as well as in the Evangelical church, with Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
