Alfred Breitsprecher of Read was drowned in Pony Creek last Sunday afternoon. He with a number of companions went swimming and it seems he was taken with cramps and sank in about 15 feet of water, never coming to the top again.

Those with him made every effort to get the body, help was called for from Elkader and a number of Elkader boys succeeded in bringing the body to shore by diving for it. The body was taken to the Gottschalk home where Breitsprecher had been working.

The funeral was held Wednesday and interment made in the old cemetery at this place.

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 6 July 1916. Local News Notes columns.

Alfred Breitsprecher, of Clayton Center, a young man about thirty years of age, was drowned in Roberts Creek near the Gottschalk place, some two miles north of Elkader, last Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Breitspretcher and two companions were in bathing and he got into a deep hole from which his companions were unable to rescue him, none of them being good swimmers.

Assistance was summoned at once, some of the boys from Elkader diving for the body, which was finally located by Henry Reinhardt, but by that time it was too late to revive him.

Deceased is survived by his aged father, Henry Breitspretcher, one sister, Mrs. August Horstman, and six brothers, all residing in this locality: Alvin, Edward, Henry, William, Charles and Louis.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at nine o'clock at the home of his brother Ed and in the church at Clayton Center, conducted by Rev. Athenstadt, and his remains were taken to Garnavillo for interment.

His kindred and friends are shocked and grieved by his tragic, untimely death, and they have the sympathy of all in their great sorrow.
