Wilker, William George 1931-2010

William George Wilker, 78, died Wednesday Jan. 6, 2010, of complications associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

William was born June 25, 1931, in Volga, Iowa, to William John and Rosena (Lenth) Wilker. He graduated from Volga High School. Oct. 9, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Darlene Nydegger. He enlisted and served in the Korean War as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. Following his time in the service, William established a dairy farm in Volga and later established Snowflake Dairy Farm in Garnavillo. He and Darlene farmed together and raised their five children.

William was an active member of the Garnavillo community. He served as a member of the Garnavillo School Board from 1970 to 1976. He was also a board member for Keystone Area Education Association. He was very active in the Clay-Gar American Legion, the Garnavillo Lion’s Club, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene (Nydegger) Wilker; two daughters, Kathleen (Don) Hensen of Ames and Leslie (Paul) Schuhmacher of Evansdale; three sons, Wesley (Joanne) Wilker of Garnavillo, Michael Wilker of St. Augustine, Fla., and William Fred (Karen) Wilker of Russell; mother-in-law, Alice Andreae of Elkader; eight grandchildren, Will Hensen of Des Moines, Elizabeth and Abby Hensen of Ames, Ben Wilker of Bettendorf, Emily Wilker of Russell, Christina Wilker of Elkader, Joe (Megan) Wilker and Austin Wilker of Garnavillo; great-grandchild, Jayden Hensen of Ames; a brother, Vernon (Evelyn) Wilker of Garnavillo; and one sister, Delores (Joe) Spielbauer of Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in McGregor with burial at the Clayton Cemetery near Clayton, Iowa with military honors by Clay-Gar American Legion. Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home assisted the family.

Memorials may be made to either St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in McGregor or the McGregor Public Library.
