Jans Tieden was born in Gross Olddorf in the Province of Hanover, Germany, April 15th, 1837. As a young man at the age of twenty-one he came to America and worked on a farm in Garnavillo and Cox Creek township. As the Civil War called for strong and healthy men he joined the army and enlisted in Co. F. of the Iowa Infantry and served his country as a good and faithful soldier until the end of the war.

In 1869, February 7th, he was married to Anna Bowman, and ever since their marriage they resided on the farm where they lived for almost half a century. His good wife preceded him in death nine years ago, January 28th, 1907.

His daughter Juliet died on November 21st, 1910.

He always enjoyed good health until Thanksgiving Day, when a complication of diseases attacked his strong body. All that medical aid could do was done to save the life of the good and kind old father. His daughters, Marie, Martha and Tillie, with tender hands nursed the invalid father and made his burdens easy to bear through the best of care. He went to sleep peacefully on Christmas morning, December 25th, at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 10 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss ten children: Mike, of Dodge Center, Minn.; Frank, George, Lewis, Marie, Tillie and Martha, of Elkader; Jansey, of Laco, Mont.; Alma G. Prowell and Anna, of Big Sandy, Mont.; also nine grandchildren and two sisters in Germany, besides numerous other relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held Friday morning at eleven o'clock at the residence, the text of Rev. A. W. Braun being from Job 5:26. Interment was in the Communia cemetery.
