Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 08 Sept. 1910. Strawberry Point column.

Wm. Davis was born in Carbondale, Luzerne Co., Pa., Nov. 24, 1842. About the year 1860 his father, with his family, moved to Illinois, leaving the boy, William, in his native country, where he earned a livelihood for the time with one of his neighbors and friends, and afterwards, was for a time fireman on a train with his older brother as engineer.

When the mighty conflict came on, which threatened the destruction of our nation, he heard the cry of his countryman, forsook his position as fireman, and true patriot that he was, volunteered his services, shouldered his musket, and marched in defense of his nation. He enlisted with Co. K. of the 11th Penn. Cavalry.

At the close of the war he came to his father's home in Illinois, and with them came to Iowa in the fall of 1865. From that time his home has been in and around Strawberry Point until his departure, which occurred at 11:30 on Tuesday, August 23, 1910.

He was married to Mrs. Eliza J. Blanchard on Sept. 12, 1866. To this union was born three children, one of whom, Anna Rene Davis, preceded her father to the Heavenly City. The other two, Mrs. Minnie Porter, of Delhi, and Fred Davis, of near Strawberry Point, were present at the funeral.

His sickness has been of long and lingering duration - his sufferings at times were great, but he bore it with Christian fortitude - often expressed himself as being at peace with all mankind and with the Lord of hosts, and was really looking with pleasure to the coming of the Grim Tyrant death to translate him from this imperfect to that all perfect and celestial city above.

Our dear friend leaves to mourn his loss, a devoted companion, who was always at his side and so careful of his ever want, during his late illness. Two devoted children, who feel as theirs was the best father ever lived, two step-children, Wm. Blanchard and Mrs. A. D. Barnes, of Independence, five grandchildren, who always found a warm welcome in their grandfather's heart, four brothers and two sisters, whose privilege it has been to always take him into consultation in the solving of difficult problems. And we may add to these a number of relatives and almost innumerable host of friends - with all of whom we want to sympathize in this their sad hour of bereavement.

A great host of sorrowing friends gathered at the residence at 1:30 Thursday afternoon to weep with the sorrowing family and to assist in paying the last tribute of respect to the dead during the funeral services. The sermon was preached by Rev. T. A. Searcy, pastor of the Baptist church. The services were taken charge of at the residence by the Masonic fraternity, accompanied by the A.O.U.W. and the Grand Army of the Republic, to all of which he was a consistent member, and joined by a long procession of friends, they marched to the cemetery where the clay tabernacle was laid to rest with the beautiful ritualistic ceremonies of the Grand Army and Masonic orders.
