Mrs. Vern Marting
Monona: Hilda Dettmann, the daughter of Julius Dettmann and Alvina, nee Hamann, was born on September 19, 1901, in Farmersburg Township, Clayton Co., Iowa. She was baptized on October 6, 1901 by Pastor Graening at National, and was confirmed on April 1, 1917 by Pastor Carl Bosholm, at Garnavillo. She attended the rural school of her home community.
On September 6, 1921, she was united in marriage with Vern Marting at Luana with Pastor H. Kumpf officiating. After their marriage, they farmed near Farmersburg for 24 years, retiring to Monona in 1945.
Mrs. Marting was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. She had served as treasurer and stewardship secretary of the Ladies Aid Society and was a member of Peace Circle.
She passed away on Thursday morning, September 28, 1972 after a lingering illness. She reached the age of 71 years and 9 days.
Surviving are her husband, Vern, a daughter, Fern, who is Mrs. Lendal Schievelbien, two granddaughters, Monica Schievelbein and Jeanne who is Mrs. Bill Zittergruen, three brothers, John and Alvin Dettman of Monona and Edwin Dettman of Farmersburg, and one sister, Melvina who is Mrs. August Hempeler of Garnavillo. Preceeding her in death were her parents, an infant son, one brother, Otto, and three sisters, Rose, who was Mrs. Mike Bente, Leona who was Mrs. Louis Mueller, and Caroline.
Services were held on Saturday September 30, 1972 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church with Pastor R.E. Langholz in charge. Burial was in the National Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Richard Huinker, Bill Wiethorn, Carl Etteldorf, Burdette Wold, Lawrence Lotza, Art Seeland, and Gaylord Oelke.
