Funeral services for Mrs. Robert (Betty) Schultz were held Monday, February 13, 2006, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, Iowa, with Rev. Christopher Staley officiating. Casketbearers were Blake Schultz, Stan Waters, Robert Rynasiewicz, Duaine Davis, William Ohloff, John Schultz, Dean Henning, Harry Waters, and Larry Fritz. Burial was in St. John Lutheran Cemetery at Luana. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Hilda Elizabeth “Betty” was born November 27, 1925, in Fayette County, near Elgin, Iowa. She was the youngest of four children born to Richard and Georgia (Casper) Strauch. Betty graduated from the Elgin High School in 1943. During high school and after she graduated, Betty worked with her parents, who owned the Elgin Echo Newspaper, as a secretary and proofreader to the editor.

September 15, 1946, Betty married Robert August Schultz in the Methodist Church in Elgin. Betty and Robert have made their home on a farm north of Luana for the last 60 years. Betty was active in the farming operation and kept busy raising three children.

May 27, 1948, a daughter, Susan Kay, was born. Another daughter, Deborah Jane, was born April 7, 1950. Deborah Jane succumbed to leukemia after a three year illness in 1957. October 2, 1956, a son, David Lawrence, was born.

Betty and Robert spent the early years of their marriage in the dairy farming business. They have been involved in the banking business at the Luana Savings Bank and Waukon Financial Corporation. Betty was Chairman of the St. John’s Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund in Luana, which was founded by the Schultz Family in 1996. Betty was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luana.

Betty was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August of 2005. She passed away in the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah Thursday, February 9, 2006.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Hugh Strauch; her sisters, Kathryn Waters and Margaret Waters; and her daughter, Deborah Jane.

Survivors include her husband, Robert August; her daughter and son, Susan Kay Schultz of Scottsdale, Ariz., and David Lawrence and Mona Schultz of Luana; and three grandchildren: Blake Robert of Urbandale, and Sarah Ann and Stephanie David Schultz of Luana.
