Mrs. Henry Henning, nee Sophia Backhaus, daughter of Karl and Kathrina Backhaus, was born June 30, 1867. On July 21 of that same year she was baptized by Pastor Paul Stockfeld. She attended both public and religious school and was confirmed at Garnavillo by Pastor Fruechtennicht. She spent the early days of her life in Garnavillo township.
On December 08, 1892 she was united in marriage to Henry Henning. For two years they lived on a farm near Garnavillo. In 1894 they moved to their farm in Farmersburg township, where they lived together until the death of her husband on August 05, 1949. They had the privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary on December 08, 1942. After the death of her husband, she continued to make her home on the home farm with her son Arno and family.
Mrs. Henning was a member of the St. John's Lutheran church and a charter member of the Ladies Aid.
She had been in fairly good health until a week ago Sunday, when she took sick and died Monday, December 29, 1952, at about 7:45 a.m.
Preceding her in death were her husband, one son Harvey, one daughter Alvina, two sisters and two brothers.
Surviving are her four children, Nelda, (Mrs. John Muller) of Luana; Marvin, Selma, (Mrs. Herb Zurcher) and Arno all of Farmersburg, two brothers, Henry of Clear Lake and August of Garnavillo; fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Jan. 01, 1:00 p.m. at the home and 1:30 at St. John's Lutheran church, Farmersburg, the Rev. R. H. Steege, pastor, officiating. Burial was at F. and W. cemetery.
