Herbert Holden Smith was born at Volga, Iowa, Nov. 02, 1885, and died at St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, May 01, at the age of 57 years, five months and 29 days.
He grew to manhood and spent most of his life in this community where he graduated from the public school and actively engaged in civic and business affairs.
On Feb. 18, 1906, he was married to Esther Jennings and they had one son, Richard. Mrs. Smith preceded her husband in death 20 years ago. On April 28, 1931, he was married to Florence Blount.
There remain to mourn his death, his wife, son Richard and three grandchildren, besides three brothers, Rev. Chas. Smith, Missoula, Mont., Arthur and Ernest of Volga City.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 05, at the Methodist church with the Rev. D. V. Butler, pastor, in charge. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery.
The casket bearers were: H. O. Probert, Walter Everitt, Lee Candee, Roy Candee, Wm. Hoskyn and Everett Hagensick of Elkader.
Among those from out-of-town who attended the last rites were: Mr. and Mrs. George E. Bright, Springville; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Smith, Grinnell; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Merriman and Marcus, Maquoketa; the Rev. D. C. Perry, Maquoketa; the Rev. and Mrs. C. E. Smith, Missoula, Mont.; Miss Emma Hoag, St. Loius, Mo.; E. W. Carlsen, Elkader.
