Jerry Haggerty [sic] was killed on Monday by the falling of a tree near Spalding's Mill, a station on the McGregor Western. Two men were chopping it down, and the deceased, walking along the track, supposed he was out of its reach, but the distance was miscalculated and the top of the tree struck him to the earth.

Dr. Andros, of this city, was called, but there was no hlep. Father Nagle attended the dying man. He died in a few hours, retaining his senses to the last gasp.

Jerry leaves a wife and children. Peace to his soul!

~Weekly North Iowa Times, Wednesday, February 8, 1865

Note: Name on gravestone in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery, McGregor is spelled HAGERTY. He was born Co. Kerry, IRE, son of Jeremiah Hagerty & Catherine.
