In Memoriam
It is not forgotten by our readers, nor will it ever be by the parents, that Hiram, son of William Moncrief, of North McGregor, was killed in February, '66, while acting as an employee of the McGregor West R'y Company. He was a very estimable young man.The "boys" in connection with the Road, A. Gorham, acting as leader, ordered a monument to Hiram, and on Sunday it was erected at the grave on Pleasant Ridge. Many from McGregor expected to be there, but the rain prevented attendance. The company was not so large as anticipated, but there were many true sympathisers [sic] with the parents of the deceased.
The foundation was laid by Mr. Sheckner. The stone and spire cost over $200. It is not often that a youth so endears himself to associates as to receive such marked evidence of regard. Mr. Courtney made a few remarks in acknowledgement of the kindness of the R'y employes and resident citizens towards a worthy young man.
Hiram Moncrief sleeps his last sleep, but the memory of his virtues survive; this honor to him should stimulate the living to emulate his example.
