Mr. Dan Lacy of this place has received a dispatch from his brother Milo, now P.M. at Julesburg and late a compositor in this office. The dispatch gives us the sad intelligence of the death, in that battle*, of Walter B. Talcott and Wm. H. Gray, both of McGregor.

With the last named, we were not personally familiar. He was salesman for Dearborn & Co., at the time of his enlistment in the 7th Cavalry. His father resides in Monroe Wis.

Mr. Gray is spoken of with great regard by those who knew him. He was 22 years old.

~Weekly North Iowa Times, Wednesday, January 18, 1865; pg 2

*The battle referred to was fought at Julesburg, Colorado Territory between a small garrison of men by Capt. "Nick" O'Brien of the 7th Cavalry and about 1500 Indians. The Indians had attacked the overland mail express and a mule train. The troops at the Julesburg Military Post drove the Indians back, where they gained over a thousand reinforcements and in turn drove back the troops to the post. A battle ensued at the stage station, where 35 Indians (including the principal chief), 19 soldiers and citizens were killed.
