Clayton County Register, 05 July 1939.

ELKPORT: This community was greatly shocked to hear of the sudden death last week Wednesday morning of Fred Schaub.

Mr. Schaub, the eldest son of Traugott and Minnie (Neubecker) Schaub, was born July 19, 1882, in Germany. He came to this country with his parents at the age of 9 months, settling in Volga township.

He was baptized in the Lutheran church and on April 18, 1897, he was confirmed in the same faith at Garnavillo. He worked on farms near Garnavillo for a number of years.

He was united in holy wedlock to Anna Horstman of Garber, January 24, 1906. The young couple settled on a farm in Volga township. They lived near Garber for the next 30 years and then moved onto a farm near Littleport, the present home. This union was blessed with three sons and one daughter.

Mr. Schaub had always enjoyed good health except for the last few years, ailing at that time but not severe. For 12 years he was a member of the church council of the Emanuel Lutheran church of Elkport, of which he was a member all his married life. He died Wednesday morning at 4:45 reaching the age of 56 years, 11 months and eight days.

Those left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife and children Albert, Elmer and Willie at home, and Malinda Reyerson of Farmersburg, two grandchildren, Verlen and Joanne, and his five sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Marie Strauss, Mrs. Carrie Bauer and Mrs. Anna Maier of Elkport, Mrs. Minnie Eggerth of Stanley, Wis., Otto of Fredericksburg and John and Willie of Guttenberg, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

The Rev. H. H. Steege of Garnavillo officiated at the funeral services in the absence of Pastor Buesing.
