August T. Bernhard, son of John H. and Katherine Bernhard, was born May 16, 1867, at Giard. Practically his entire life was spent in that community. As a young man he was employed by J. D. Bickel at Giard, who at that time operated a creamery and produce station. On October 02, 1890, he was united in marriage to Katherine E. Yearous, who preceded him in death July 28, 1926. To this union six children were born: Mrs. Willis Bernhard of Monona, Helen of Charles City, and four who died in infancy.

On June 04, 1929, August Bernhard was married to Martha Yearous, and lived at Giard until November, 1935, when he and Martha went to Monona and made their home with his daughter, Mrs. Willis Bernhard. Martha preceded him in death April 12, 1937.

His death occurred on Saturday morning, April 29, 1939, after a lingering illness. He was a patient sufferer and never complained.

Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Willis Bernhard of Monona, and Helen Bernhard of Charles City; three grandchildren, Parma of New York City, Catherine of Mt. Vernon, and Norma Lou at home; three brothers, John of Monona, Will of Colesburg, and Arthur of Burt; four sisters, Mrs. Tillie Sampson of Colesburg, Mrs. Lydia Kruse of Monona, Mrs. Nettie Allert of Froelich, and Mrs. Katie Dieckman of Farmersburg.

Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at two o'clock and at the Methodist church at Giard at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. M. C. Melcher of Giard in charge. Burial was in the Giard cemetery.
